Patient Case Studies
Danielle S.

In September 2002 by a referral from a Vision Therapist in Charlotte, Danielle presented to our office with reading difficulties. While reading she noticed symptoms of headaches, blurred vision and discomfort with the eyes. Other observations were noted as well: reading pulled in closer, loss of place while reading, using finger as a marker when reading, and slouched reading posture. Often she would start on the wrong line and get bored. Her mother stated she has trouble tracking words and thought! She was not very interested in reading. Two years previously she had an eye exam and stated there was no vision problem.

On evaluation, the findings revealed normal eye health, very different and significant degrees of farsightedness in each eye, visual efficiency deficits including a vertical imbalance between the eyes and visual-information processing deficits.

A developmental vision care program was recommended. This included behavioral optometric vision therapy and lens therapy. The office-based portion was concluded at 28 weeks and the home based portion 8 weeks later. Changes were noted throughout the program in reading, academics, ocular symptoms as well as changes emotionally and behaviorally. Her mother wrote: Danielle can read much better than I had hoped for. Her comprehension has improved and she actually likes to read. All schoolwork, piano, etc. has become easier.
