Patient Case Studies
Bradley S.
Bradley was seen upon referral by a primary care optometrists for reading difficulties in August 2003. He had received treatment at Sylvan Learning Center for approximately 6 months and according to the parents had made little progress. He had failed end of grade testing and was retested and passed after summer school. He was held back to repeat third grade. He had passed all conventional vision screenings at his pediatrician's office. His mother indicated academic difficulties had persisted since kindergarten in spite of extremely high IQ. Homework was taking 2 and 3 hours at night.
The evaluation revealed normal eye health, reduced visual acuity, normal eye structural shape but significant deficits in visual information acquisition, processing, integration and execution.
A developmental vision care program consisting of behavioral vision therapy and lens therapy was begun. The office based portion concluded at 35 weeks with the home portion concluding 8 weeks later. The changes in Bradley were dramatic.
- The Fall 2003 E.O.G. scores were: Reading 233 (29 Percentile)
Mathematics 250 (96 Percentile) - The Spring 2004 E.O.G. scores were: Reading 249 (52 percentile)
Mathematics 262 (93 Percentile)
Changes were noted in all areas but especially reading, academics as well as emotional and behavioral changes. His mother wrote, "Bradley can read now without jumping around on the page, more self esteem, he likes school better. Thank God for Dr. Roberts, we were about to give up and just accept Bradley would always have problems reading. Therapy has changed our lives. We are so glad we didn't give up. Our prayers were answered!"
